Top 100 Movie Review #2

About Time is a movie that was released in 2013 about when Tim Lake, played by Domhnall Gleeson, is 21 and his father, played by Bill Nighy, tells him a secret. The secret is that the men in their family can travel through time. Although he can't change history, Tim resolves to improve his life by getting a girlfriend. He meets Mary, played by Rachel McAdams, and falls in love and finally wins her heart. There is a lot of character development in Tim as he soon realizes that not all days should be played through multiple times. Some should just be lived in the moment. After many attempts to rewin Mary’s heart and help a friend with his career, Tim and Mary finally get together happily. Throughout all of the times that Tim travels back in time, by going into a dark space and thinking about when he wants to go back to, he tries to make every step of the way perfect. His motivation to go travel back in time is to get his first love to love him back when she was staying with his family for two months of the summer. However, when he and Mary are finally together, he decides that he doesn’t really want to relive all of the moments because of how perfect they were the first time. At the end of the movie, an important person in Tim’s life, who will remain unnamed, passes away and on the verge of his child being born, Tim travels back in time with that person to relive all of their favorite memories. This had to happen at that moment because as soon as someone is born, you cannot go back in time because doing so will change everything.

The filming of this movie was very well done. I noticed that it was almost filmed like a TV show because the shots were sometimes like in the office where they pan from one side of a room to another. The lighting was another big touch for About Time because they reflected ‘sunlight’ across character's faces in a way that could show many different times of a day. The acting was also done well because it was believable that the characters that didn’t travel back in time had not lived a scene that Tim was recreating for the third or fourth time. The filming of this movie created a romantic, loving effect that really made me love the characters and their lives.

I would greatly recommend this movie. It is such a good movie that really provides everyone with the purpose of living each day to its fullest. At the end of the movie, Tim is narrating a morning that he wakes up and is looking at how peacefully Mary is sleeping. He says something along the lines of “I would never want to relive this day because of how much I love her. She is so beautiful and I would never take that back”. Tim learns that traveling through time had its ups and downs but that living as an ordinary person who cannot travel back through time is the best way to live life to its fullest with the people you love.
